Sustainable farming business on Elba Island: Fattoria delle Ripalte
We are located within the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, which is also why the agronomic management of our farm on Elba Island follows the principles of sustainable agriculture:
- Producing healthy and safe food by optimizing available resources and technical means
- Preserve and protect the quality of the environment and natural resources
Fertilization is done with organic fertilizers and the practice of "green manure" (planting of legumes in rows that fix nitrogen and are buried at flowering).
Weed control is done by mechanical tillage or hoeing. The strategy of Integrated pest management is also adopted, which focuses on minimal use of synthetic pesticides.
No irrigation is carried out, given the limited existing water supply.

Wind, sunshine and good soil
Within the 450-hectare property, the sixteen hectares of vineyards are located in four main areas, all above 170 meters above sea level, providing increased ventilation and protection from nighttime humidity generated by the proximity of the sea.
Poggio Turco's vineyards feature Aleatico grapes; the southern exposure is ideal for perfect ripening.
The Gorgaccio area, with its eastern exposure, favors morning exposure to the sun that dries the grapes from nighttime humidity and protects them from excessive afternoon heat. The vineyards here comprise, primarily Vermentino and Alicante grapes.

The Pascoli Alti vineyards are located at 300 meters above sea level: the delayed harvest ensures a greater finesse and acidity to the white grapes that grow there, even in the hottest years.
The soils are all of volcanic origin (metamorphic granite) with considerable mineral endowment. All vineyards are fenced to protect against wildlife (hares, wild boar and wild goats) particularly attracted to the ripe grapes.
